New “Trump Accounts” Give Kids a Head Start

New “Trump Accounts”: A Powerful Way to Jump-Start Kids’ Retirement Savings

Recent legislation has introduced a new retirement savings option that allows families to begin saving for a child’s future long before that child earns their first paycheck.

Often referred to as “Trump Accounts,” these accounts were created under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and are designed to give children an early financial head start through long-term, tax-advantaged investing. While the concept is new, the potential impact of starting retirement savings decades earlier than usual is significant.

What Is a Trump Account?

A Trump Account is a tax-advantaged retirement account for children under age 18. Unlike traditional IRAs, these accounts do not require the child to have earned income, making them fundamentally different from other retirement savings vehicles.

Parents, grandparents, employers, charitable organizations, and even state programs can contribute to a Trump Account on a child’s behalf. Any child with a Social Security number is eligible, provided the account is opened before age 18.

In addition, certain children born between 2025 and 2028 are eligible for a one-time $1,000 government contribution, giving the account an initial boost from the start.

Contribution Rules and How the Accounts Grow

Trump Accounts allow total annual contributions of up to $5,000 per year, with limits indexed for inflation. Employers may also contribute up to $2,500 annually, which could make these accounts attractive for family businesses or as part of employer benefit programs.

Contributions are made with after-tax dollars, but the account grows tax-deferred while the child is a minor. Over long periods of time, this tax-deferred growth — combined with decades of compounding — can be powerful, even with modest annual contributions.

What Happens When the Child Turns 18?

Once the child reaches age 18, the Trump Account automatically converts into a Traditional IRA in the child’s name. From that point forward, standard IRA rules apply.

This transition opens the door to additional planning opportunities. For example, if the young adult has relatively low income early in their career, families may consider Roth IRA conversions, potentially locking in lower tax rates and decades of tax-free growth.

How Trump Accounts Fit With Other Savings Strategies

Trump Accounts are not a replacement for other common savings tools. Instead, they serve a different purpose:

  • 529 plans are designed primarily for education expenses
  • Custodial brokerage accounts offer flexibility but fewer tax advantages
  • Trump Accounts are specifically focused on long-term retirement savings

Because each tool serves a different goal, Trump Accounts may work best as part of a broader, coordinated family financial plan.

Why These Accounts Are Generating Interest

The primary appeal of Trump Accounts is time. Starting retirement savings at birth — or early childhood — gives investments decades to grow. For families thinking long-term or across generations, this can meaningfully change the trajectory of retirement preparedness.

That said, these accounts come with rules, contribution limits, and long-term restrictions. They may not be appropriate for every family or every goal, which is why thoughtful planning and professional guidance are important.

The Bottom Line

Trump Accounts introduce a new way to think about long-term financial planning for children. While they don’t replace education savings plans or other investment accounts, they offer a unique opportunity to begin retirement planning early — when compounding is most powerful.

As with any new strategy, the key is understanding how it fits into your overall financial picture.
